The nomination comes as the Obama administration works to eliminate barriers to military service based on sexuality or gender. Army secretary is a civilian position.

Fanning’s nomination must be confirmed by the Senate. He would replace John McHugh, who has said he plans to step down no later than Nov. 1.

A woman and and her mother were mistaken for a lesbian couple and attacked at a New York City restaurant on Saturday (12 September) night.

Tiffany Santiago, 27, was eating a late-night dinner at a Korean restaurant in Midtown when two women and a man at a nearby table started yelling anti-gay slurs and throwing things at them.

‘We keep hearing the word “lesbian” said over and over again,’ Santiago told CBS2.

‘Me and my mom look very similar in age, and so I think me with the short hair, and my mom’s really tall – she’s like five-eight; she’s a big lady.’

She added: ‘I think they thought we were on a date.’

The trio then forced Santiago to the ground and dragged her by her legs. Her mother was not attacked.

‘He threw me across the restaurant,’ she said.

‘I don’t even know how far I went, but I went through tables, chairs, glasses.’

Santiago was treated at hospital, where she received six stitches in her knee. She still has to walk with a cane and said it would be several days before she could go back to work as a veterinary technician.

Police are searching for a white balding man in his mid-40s, and two white women in their mid-30s.

The New York Police Department’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating.

The Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Thursday, arrested four persons, Abdullahi Rabiu, 28, Auwalu Idris, 41, Nazifi Abba, 25 and 18-year-old Abu Zaid Yusu, in Taura Local Government Area of the state, for committing sodomy with a 16-year-old boy identified as Umar Sani.

According to Sani, the suspects who reside in the same local government, defiled him at different locations within their community and threatened to kill him if he tells anybody. He alleged that they took rounds of anal sex with him, adding that he could hardly stool and had severe pains in his anus.

Reports say the victim lodged a complaint with the State Command of NSCDC because according to him, he could no longer stand the abuse from the quartet.

The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Dr. Muhammed Gidado, said the victim reported that the four men had been abusing him sexually for over 2 years at different locations and he could not even tell his parents because of fear following the threats over his life.

Gidado further explained that report of the young boy was verified when he was taken to a hospital for medical examination, adding that the result proved that he had been abused sexually.

Similarly, he said the suspects were arrested by NSCDC officers, adding that after hours of interrogation, the quartet admitted to have committed the crime. They however, pleaded with the officers to forgive and let them go, saying it was the work of the devil.

As the story goes, the Commandant disclosed that the command had already taken the four suspects to a Magistrate’s Court in Kiyawa Local Government Area for prosecution.

Gidado condemned the act and reportedly warned that anyone who indulged in such acts would be made to face the wrath of the law, irrespective of their personality or position.

He further stated that such evil acts had no place in Jigawa State.

Dairy of a Married Nigerian Gay Man in Diaspora #1

I am a married man. A father of 2 beautiful kids and i recently found out i am HIV postive. My wife knows about it. She also knows i am bisexual and since finding out i do men, she has renounced having anything sexual to do with me. Why didnt she divorce me you might ask, because of the stigma associated with divorcing your husband in the part of Nigeria we come from. We live in the same house, cater to our children and run financial expenses together, but never have sex together. I dont even have the libido and i know she gets her sexual fantasies satiated by other men.

Here in Canada, things are way different, i am free to be openly gay, but i keep it on the wraps, being open to only a few friends and family, so as to prevent a big scandal so as my people back in Nigeria won't know the truth. I love my children, and they are one of the reasons i live, so i have made up my mind not to let HIV or any other disease take me away from them. I have made the resolve to be strong, and do things right from now on, no wild unprotected sexual orgies, no crazy weekend hangouts etc.

At first when i came out to my wife during our family summer vacation in Montreal, she was angry and warned me not to mention it again, that i should pray harder and ask God to cure of this mid life crises, but the sad truth is that i was born this way. I have always been gay and will always be gay... Nothing can change that fact. Reality however dawned on her when she caught a neigbour and myself in bed getting our groove on, when i supposedly thought she had gone to work. That day i felt like scum, she cried, cursed and swore, but i was cormforted by the fact that i had opened up to her a few months back. Caitlyn Jenner has filed court documents to legally change her name and gender.

The former Olympian, who came out as transgender a little more than two months ago, filed the petition Tuesday (15 September) at Los Angeles Superior Court.

The petition seeks to change the gender on her birth certificate to male and her name to Caitlyn Marie Jenner.

The reality star also asked that her personal information, specifically a physician’s statement, be kept under seal to protect her privacy and safety.

‘Although public support for my transition has been overwhelmingly supportive, I am also receiving unwelcome negative attention from private citizens, including threats of bodily harm,’ the 65-year-old wrote in a sworn statement.

‘I believe the widespread dissemination of my personal information will compromise both my privacy and my safety given the public interest in my transition, which is not all positive, and will significantly increase the likelihood I would receive further threatening attention.’

The name/gender-change process typically takes eight months due to a backlog of applications.

This Gay Couple Have Been Together for 55 Years!

A gay couple in Britain just celebrated their 55th anniversary together. They are believed to be the country’s longest gay pairing.

78-year-old Ted Spring and 77-year-old Paul Pollard first met at The Lockyer Hotel, one of only two gay speakeasies in their hometown of Plymouth at the time, back in 1960, when homosexuality was still considered illegal in the U.K.

“I was chatting to a friend of his when he came over. He bought me a drink and we just started talking,” Ted told The Plymouth Herald. “He’s never bought me a drink since, mind you!”

“I knew from the minute I saw him that this is someone I could spend the rest of my life with,” he added.

When they first met, Ted admits he was still struggling with coming to terms with his sexuality.

“I was always frightened by the gay side of life, but Paul didn’t care,” he explained. “He always used to say, ‘What’s wrong with being queer? What’s wrong with that? Who cares what people think!’”

“He showed me that no matter who you love, or what you love, love is beautiful and, after being with Paul for 55 years, I can honestly say I’ve never been happier.”

The couple eventually went into business together, managing several bars and restaurants before eventually opening a small B&B, which they ran until they retired in 2000.

Over that time, they saw huge advancements in gay rights, but Ted confesses there are still times when he misses the good ol’ days, back when homosexuality was still considered taboo and gay people had to band together for support.

“We were like a big family,” he said, speaking of the friends he used to hang out with at The Lockyer Hotel. “We all knew who we were and where we could go. You’d go out and visit people on a Sunday for tea and things like that.”
“The country has changed so much, but prejudice still goes on,” he added. “If a lot more people had a better attitude, it would allow for a greater portion of society to live their lives.”

Five Anglican priests in Kenya have been suspended ‘for being gay’.

Their actual ‘sins’, however, have nothing to do with homosexuality at all.

Bishop Joseph Kagunda, the diocese of Mount Kenya West, suspended the clerics when it was found in a tribunal that they were ‘guilty of the sin of homosexuality’.

Kenyan newspaper The Star reports the tribunal said the priests involved had been found guilty of taking advantage of children in their custody. This involved having sex with the children and then forcing them to keep it quiet.

The tribunal called this homosexuality when this is very clearly pedophilia.

The tribunal removed the clerics’ license to preach and then told their victims to consult the police if they wanted to see a conviction.

Bishop Kagunda said the Anglican Church of Kenya is ‘totally against any kind of gay practice and marriage, unlike the mother church, the Church of England, which embraces homosexuality’.

The Rev. John Njogu Gachau, accused of ‘luring young boys into sex in his parish house’, also found the claim that he was gay offensive.

‘These accusations are false,’ he told The Nairobian. ‘I don’t get why a man can level such abhorrent claims against a servant of God. I have never had sex with a fellow man. This is just distateful’.

Changing Attitude Kenya, a LGBTI rights group, described Kagunda’s words as ‘not acceptable at all’.

If the five priests do not appeal, they will be excommunicated.

People who identify as transgender or transsexual are usually people who are born with typical male or female anatomies but feel as though they’ve been born into the “wrong body.” For example, a person who identifies as transgender or transsexual may have typical female anatomy but feel like a male and seek to become male by taking hormones or electing to have sex reassignment surgeries.

People who have intersex conditions have anatomy that is not considered typically male or female. Most people with intersex conditions come to medical attention because doctors or parents notice something unusual about their bodies. In contrast, people who are transgendered have an internal experience of gender identitythat is different from most people.

Many people confuse transgender and transsexual people with people with intersex conditions because they see two groups of people who would like to choose their own gender identity and sometimes those choices require hormonal treatments and/or surgery. These are similarities. It’s also true, albeit rare, that some people who have intersex conditions also decide to change genders at some point in their life, so some people with intersex conditions might also identify themselves as transgender or transsexual.

In spite of these similarities, these two groups should not be and cannot be thought of as one. The truth is that the vast majority of people with intersex conditions identify as male or female rather than transgender or transsexual. Thus, where all people who identify as transgender or transsexual experience problems with their gender identity, only a small portion of intersex people experience these problems.

It’s also important to understand the differences between these two groups because in spite of some similarities they face many different struggles, including different forms of discrimination. The differences between transgender and transsexual and intersex have been understood by lawmakers in countries such as Australia where lawmakers have publicly acknowledged that people with intersex conditions have distinct needs from people who identify as transgender or transsexual.

People who identify as transgender or transsexual also face discrimination and deserve equality. We also believe that people with intersex conditions and folks who identify as transgender or transsexual can and should continue to work together on human rights issues; however, there are important differences to keep in mind so that both groups can work toward a better future.

Researchers at the University of Rome Tor Vergata in Italy claim to have found a

“remarkable association between dysfunctional aspects of personality and homophobic attitudes.”

They asked over 500 college students ages 18 to 30 to complete a series of psychometric evaluations in an effort to assess their levels of homophobia, psychopathologic symptoms, defense mechanisms and attachment styles.

What they discovered was that students who scored highly on the psychoticism tests also tended to be more homophobic, “demonstrating that pathologic personality traits are involved in homophobic attitudes.”

Psychoticism is a psychological trait often found in severe mental conditions that can contribute to heightened states of anger and hostility.

“Our study follows a controversial issue regarding homophobia as a possible mental disorder,” researchers concluded.

“After discussing for centuries if homosexuality is to be considered a disease, for the first time we demonstrated that the real disease to be cured is homophobia, associated with potentially severe psychopathologies.”
